Interview for Marketing / General Assistant position I found advertised on Craigslist. Things did not go as expected, in fact did not go at all.
I bussed to the U-District and from there caught the 372 to Lake City, suburban setting: car dealerships and teriyaki spots. According to Google maps the business wasn’t far from where I got off the bus. It was kind of a rundown neighborhood speckled. I felt conspicuous in my interview get-up with my little wool coat and shiny boots, shuffling quickly past a XXX Erotic Video Outlet and a pawn shop within along the same street.
Looking for the company address, I passed the only business/office buildings without a match, only to find myself entering a residential area, specifically, duplexes. Not a good sign. I got close, but I didn’t have a chance to confirm which duplex since I would have had to go down an alley of sorts which was blocked by a rather disheveled gentleman who was rooting through the debris inside his car.
I felt it was likely imprudent to approach him and worse to attempt to explore the alley between the duplexes in pursuit of an address that wasn’t going to be visible from the sidewalk. The whole thing screamed sketchy, so I continued walking and then circled quickly back in search of a bus stop, any bus stop, and hopped the first bus that showed up, the 522 Express to Downtown.
Hmm. Between this and the scamster responses to my craigslist inquiries (the ones with the suspect double spacing and the link to a requisite credit check prior to interviewing — T confirmed the link launches a nasty bug), the job hunt seems just that much more discouraging.
